Eleonas, the Unconscious of the City
DESCRIPTION
This picture is part of a photography series that depicts the area of Eleonas of Athens. This area is for the city of Athens what the unconscious is for the man. There, it has been placed what passes under the barrier of meaning and aesthetically disturbes the “soul” of the city. In the area there’s a constant interaction between space and people. This interdependence leads people to cover their needs by taking advantage of the already existing space and buildings. Besides, this also leads to the formation of space and buildings. The whole area is a "recycling" of means, spaces and buildings. We could understand this phenomenon, If we went back over the early human construction activities, in times when architectural rules hadn’t yet been established and spaces were treated as “raw material” that had to be transformed in order to cover the new needs that had arisen. The images have been taken by an analogic camera and the cross processing technique is used. They have been printed in 50X50 cm (subject matter) with an extra 5 cm white margin. There are no titles, so the viewer is given the freedom to acknowledge the “unconscious desires” of his own city, in spite of their strive to be “something” there are fade to be “nothing”.
