‘Afia’(not her real name) lives in southern Afghanistan, which has a rich, proud but violent history. Normally, Afia is covered in a purple burka. You are now seeing a part of her face, which most men in her family will never see. Afghanistan is one of the hardest places to be a woman. During Taliban rule, girls were refused an education. Many women can't write or read their own name. Afia's 11-year-old cousin will soon be married.
We don’t have to imagine a world where women are too scared to show their face - we live in one.
