Zhe de wo en jian ne’e (“This is My Home”)
DESCRIPTION
Pictured here is a Jiaorong Tibetan woman inside her home in Jiekuo, a remote mountain village in mid-western China. Jiarong Tibetans are a distinct part of the Tibetan minority group, following a predominantly agricultural lifestyle and speaking a form of Tibetan (Jiarong) that is mutually uninteligible with standard Tibetan. In the face of mounting pressure towards globalization and modernization, it is challenging for Jiarong Tibetans to preserve their traditional ways of life. Fortunately, many villagers like Xiuhua (the woman in this picture) work to address this issue by embracing local traditions. After living with her for a week, the core values of the Jiarong people became apparent to me—compassion, community, and perhaps most important, cultural pride. I wanted to convey these values in a picture of Xiuhua seated in front of her hearth. The simple arrangement of wood-fired stove, wok, and tea pots serves as the home’s primary communal space. Resplendent in one of her most prized kejing dresses, Xiuhua makes her message very clear: “This is my home.”
