Honorable Mention
Red cabbage | Blue hour
DESCRIPTION
I like to photograph ordinary fruit & vegetables to show the viewer how extraordinary they can be. This portrait of red cabbage was taken during the evening; blue hour and low light conditions. The shot was taken solely with natural light ing which created a mysterious blue glow on the outerleafs of the cabbage. The cabbage was photographed against a dark handpainted backdrop to create a monochromatic colour scheme to match the time of day. The photo is part of a series on red cabbage. AUTHOR
FOODISM360 (Simone da Lima’s pseudonym) specialises in minimalistic whole foods photography, plant-based recipe development & food inspired graphic design. FOODISM360 has a lifelong love affair with nature, food & visual storytelling. She grew up in a small town in Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. Friesland is a province marked by numerous waterways and unique flora & fauna. Born to Moluccan parents and growing up among the Frisians shaped the foundation of FOODISM360’s strong connection to nature, her love for (growing) organic fruit & vegetables, foraging in the forest, and preparing jamu -Indonesian plant-based medicinal drinks. She started baking at the age of three, shot her first photos when she was five, but she didn’t pursuit photography as a career until a few years ago. FOODISM360 has developed a distinctive visual signature that can best be described as real, minimal, tactile, intimate, poetic and sensual. Her visual language is influenced by the change of seasons in both subject and monochromatic colour scheme.
FOODISM360 has a strong interdisciplinary background in brand communications, architectural design, interior styling, gastronomy & herbalism. She has run the gamut within the creative industry and wore all sorts of hats like graphic designer, interior designer & interior stylist, architectural designer, in-store stylist, visual merchandiser & senior art director.
She has worked as a freelance vegetarian chef & pâtissière in South-East Asia, North-Africa & Turkey. FOODISM360 has also worked a concept developer & product developer & food trendwatcher for a Dutch foodservice company. This gives her a broad base from which to capture various food stills, and also the skills to create new dishes which she prepares & plates herself.
FOODISM360 aims to (re)connect people to nature & the origin of food by highlighting ordinary edible plants that are often overlooked, forgotten/simply taken for granted.
