Honorable Mention
Colours of Riisitunturi
DESCRIPTION
Polar night occurs in the northern and southern extremities of the planet when the sun stays below the horizon for 24 hours. In the most extreme longitudes, polar night can last for 179 days. The best lighting conditions are the polar twilight, when there is no true daylight but the scattering of light particles by the upper atmosphere creates an ethereal blend of pinks, purples and yellows. Finland in early January is an ideal location, as seen here at the magical Riisitunturi National Park. AUTHOR
