Incendios - Fires in Amazonas
DESCRIPTION
Members of the voluntary fireman group UUBR are fighting off the fire that is threatening to reach small community of San Fermín near the city of Concepcion in Bolivia. Most likely the fire was started by somebody from the village. Practice of chaqueo - burning the forest to clear the land for farming - is widely spread in the region and is tolerated if not even encouraged by the local government. This year, fires in the Amazonas surprised the world with their intensity. This intensity is without a doubt caused by the human intervention. The region is undergoing massive transformation. AUTHOR
