Grand Louvre Pyramids
DESCRIPTION
The Louvre Pyramid is constructed from large glass and metal and the pyramid was designed by the Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei. The large pyramid is surrounded by three smaller pyramids, in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace, Paris. The main entrance to the Louvre Museum is in the large pyramid. Since its completion in 1989 it has become a landmark of the city of Paris.The structure has a height of 21.6 metres (71 ft) and it’s square base has sides of 34 metres (112 ft) with a base surface area of 1,000 square metres (11,000 sq ft). It is build up of 603 rhombus-shaped and 70 triangular glass segments. The pyramid structure was engineered by Nicolet Chartrand Knoll Ltd. of Montreal together with Rice Francis Ritchie of Paris.
In the same year the Louvre Pyramid opened, architect I. M. Pei used large glass pyramids in the design of the roofs of the IBM Somers Office Complex in Westchester County, New York. He also returned to the glass pyramid concept again at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, which was opened in 1995.
