Honorable Mention
DIOR, NOT FOR EVERYONE
DESCRIPTION
My son and I had just an hour left in Paris before our return to Warsaw, Poland. We'd been there to experience the city's sights and sounds, and discover its art. The visit was a present for my son's 18th birthday because he wants to attend Warsaw's Academy of Fine Arts. We were walking down the Champs-Elysees for the last time talking about how wonderful it all had been. I didn't have my camera with me as the memory card was full, and my son was tired of me taking shots. We reflected on how the designer stores of Paris are not for everyone, but only a tiny number. Then I saw a prostrate woman, arm outstretched against the surgical white Dior background. The context was so striking I just had to capture it. My son hesitated to let me use his phone (better camera than on mine!) because he felt a photo might be inappropriate. I explained my intention was to do some good, to display reality, to open some eyes. He finally lent me the phone and I managed to get a single image. A weary worker had walked into the shot and made it more powerful, complete.
