I always wanted to see sand dunes one day. As a boy, growing up in Germany, far away from any desert, they always fascinated me. When I went for a road trip through the US last summer, I planned to stay one night at the dunes, near Pismo Beach, CA. When I left the bus and walked to the dunes while the sun slowly disappeared, I saw more and more cars, driving across the beach. It seemed like some students celebrated their holiday. Until 1 or 2 AM, I really had to look after cars and trucks while exploring the dunes. Then it went silent. The full moon showed a landscape, I never could have imagined. Gigantic dunes with all different kinds of patterns, only interrupted by the car tracks. I set my camera on my tripod, sat down, and watched how the slowly changing light shaped the landscape in front of me. It was an experience I will never forget.
