Honorable Mention
Last exit before freedom
DESCRIPTION
I found this surprising view in Vienna, Austria. The dark passage that leads to the illuminated courtyard symbolizes the long road to freedom, which seems tempting, but in its bright, revealing effect can also be frightening.
Shortly before reaching the redeeming light, however, one last dark door awaits on the right side. The temptation to return to the safety of darkness at the last second after all. Coupled with the uncertainty of what awaits behind it.
AUTHOR
Matthias Brandt (artist name: YAMAKASINO) was born in 1978 in Bielefeld (Germany) and startet out as a graffiti artist. Already at the age of 15 he sprayed commissioned works for private individuals, companies and public carriers and explored many other areas of street art, such as stencil, oneline and tape art.
Meanwhile, his understanding of color contrasts, shapes and image divisions, acquired here, influences his photographic works.
With his MINIMALarchitecture series he attempts to find simplicity in the chaos of the big city and make it visible.
The images show and enhance shapes, colors and contrasts that have been obscured by urban sensory overload.
With his urban decollage photography, he maps the cultural pulse in major cities using torn-down event posters.
In the last 2 years YAMAKASINO realized more than 10 exhibitions all over Germany.
He published his own Photobook "MINIMALarchitecture" and designed Book- and CD-covers.
He lives and works mainly in Berlin, but has also traveled for his photographic work to Tel Aviv, Bordeaux, Valencia, the Canary Islands, Marseille, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Braunschweig and Munich, for example.
