Honorable Mention
The transient nature of life
DESCRIPTION
The sun shines brightly, casting rays of warm light on the train station platforms. The sunlight filters through the spaces between the buildings, and the windows of the trains, creating changing patterns of light and shadow and illuminating moments that recall directed lighting in theatre plays. While the passengers wait for their trains, they are immersed in a plethora of colours making me feel like the spectator of a previously rehearsed performance. The dance of light and shadow reminds me of the nature of time and the endless possibilities of beauty that exist in the world. AUTHOR
Aliette Bretel (n. 1981, Lima - Peru) . Peruvian-born Visual Artist and Photographer living between Cambridge and Lima. Graduated from El Centro de la Imagen (Lima) in 2004, followed by studies of documentary photography in the association of photojournalists of the Argentinean Republic (ARGRA) in 2005. My photos are often presented in exhibitions, art fairs, festivals, and events. They have been shown in London, Cambridge, Chicago, Lima, Buenos Aires, Ankara, Berlin, Barcelona, Zürich, and Venice.
My body of work is divided between fine art and documentary photography, tackling both subjects in different and unique ways, but at the same equally loading them with my own inner world, capturing what exists beyond the obvious.
My documentary photographic work examines the unnoticed and often overlooked aspects of everyday life, exploring both the mundane and the extraordinary elements that are easily taken for granted, capturing unique moments that reveal otherwise hidden depths beneath the surface of society, bringing to light the beauty of the simplicity of the apparent monotony of everyday life.
On the other hand, my artistic work has been defined by a strong reference to memories, the past and the passing of time. Using analogue and digital cameras, cardboard and toy cameras, digitised film, and digital video, my body of work is a unique and timeless journey that merges the physical with the intangible. With a visual, ethereal and subtle poetic narrative, my images impacted the viewer's emotion, urging them to immerse in their own memories, like an urgent call to remember themselves.
