Mémoire Habillée
DESCRIPTION
Mémoire habillée - A project under construction since 2019To dress is to show oneself to the world in a way that one chooses. Whether as a profession, a sense of belonging, a disguise, camouflage or a political act, clothing is omnipresent in our lives. It says something about us that we try to control, but which sometimes escapes us. It reminds us of who we were yesterday, who we dreamed of becoming, who those who came before us were. Over the course of our lives, we accumulate clothes, accessories and objects in quantity. Symptoms of our consumerist societies. These objects sometimes pass through the ages, passed from hand to hand, tidied up, piled up, often forgotten, but also found, rediscovered, rehabilitated and made sacred.
A gateway to the intimacy of those who inhabit it, our series of photographs straddles the boundaries between fashion, performance, documentary and autofiction. High-school students, athletes, fishermen, lawyers, painters, men, women, teenagers... all reveal to us, through their clothing, a part of their memories, their lives, and the lives of those who saw them come into being. The accumulation process is identical for all. The choice of clothes and objects is theirs, as is the choice of location.
The accumulation is composed by six hands, with respect for the person being documented. Each poses atop his or her dome, as if carried by memory, reigning over his or her memories and their vestiges, delivered to the gaze.
The stories are told in the details, symbols and anecdotes that the viewer discovers through meticulous observation of the image. In the folds, seams and draperies, the imagination takes unexpected paths, seeking beyond appearances.
A first series of 21 portraits will be exhibited at Galerie Porte B in Paris, from October 7 to November 12, 2023
AUTHOR
Pierre et Florent - Biography"Photographers & filmmakers as a duo since 2010, our story comes to life around shared passion for living and helping others live intense personal experiences, documenting them through images and sharing them with as many people as possible.
With our first performance project Heores under the waves (2010-2013), we experimented with the media of photography & video, staging & costume, fiction and performance, around themes such as the new generations' loss of meaning and the advent of new Heralds.
Then, experimentation with studio photography led us to work on new themes. In a second project entitled Les idiots de l'image (2013-2014), attempts at self-portraits & self-fictions, quotations from burlesque works of art, neo-baroque still lifes. We play with identities, their clichés, artificial exoticism and the distortion of reality it engenders.
Represented by the international gallery Pristine, in Monterrey, Mexico, we have had the opportunity to exhibit these projects on several occasions in Mexico (Monterrey), the United States (San Diego) and Europe (Paris, Brussels, Charleroi).
Since 2019, alongside our work as photographers-directors for fashion and music, we've been developing new forms of imagery, with a deep desire to reconnect with the performance, intimacy and staging of our early productions. This is how the Mémoire habillée project was born, around a simple idea : to make portraits through clothing".
