Honorable Mention
Katrina, Desert, Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION
Born In Translation is a multimedia project conceived by Hamadou Frédéric Baldé Pham, who has spent his life observing the complex and often unconscious processes by which he, and others born into more than one culture, forged a singular personal identity from the inchoate melding of starkly different backgrounds. Katrina was born in Spanish Town (Jamaica) from a Jamaican mother and a British father. She currently lives in Los Angeles (USA).
She is herself in search of new ways to find harmony among her multiple heritage, to be fully seen, to be reborn rather than lost in translation.
AUTHOR
Hamadou Frédéric Baldé Pham is a French-American visual artist and a professional director and photographer. He splits his time between Paris and New York, where he lived for almost 15 years. Born near Paris from a French-Vietnamese mother and a Nomad Fulani father, his work is deeply rooted in his multicultural heritage. His origins lead him to create the project “Born in Translation”, in which he observes the complex and often unconscious processes, that go into building a mixed identity. Through sensuality and movement, he offers an in-depth analysis of humanity and interconnectedness, and brings this inherent diversity and exploration of the concept of transmission in every image he creates.
In parallel to his personal artistic projects, he began his commercial work in France in the early 2000s, as an editor and camera operator. When he moved to New York in 2007, he switched to directing, notably for the fashion and music industries. Thus, he directed the music videos for Fally Ipupa (2023), Gilone (2021-2022), Mayra Andrade (2019), La Mess (2019), Aluna (2018), among others. In 2019, he directed a Behind-The-Scenes video during Beyoncé & Jay Z’s OTR II European tour. Furthermore, he worked with international mode & beauty brands for their campaigns such as Guibert (2022-2023), Gynette NY (2013-2020), Giu Giu (2017) and Death to Tennis x Ali Mahershala (2016)...
In addition to his artistic and professional projects, he likes to pass on his knowledge he has acquired over the years. Therefore, he advised the students of the ESI Business school in Paris on how to "create, maintain and convey an image". He was also invited to a talk about African diaspora artists during the OFF program at the Biennale of Dakar in Paris (2022).
