Honorable Mention
The secret landscape
DESCRIPTION
This macro abstract photograph is of a gemstone known as Marra Mamba Tiger Eye, only found in Western Australia. Mara Mamba is extremely old, forming more than 2700 million years ago. Minerals such as jasper, haematite, goethite and magnetite are often responsible for the characteristic colour. Earth movements over millions of years have led to folding and faulting, which has distorted the layers of the individual minerals. When I discovered this piece in a small online shop in Australia a few years ago, I was so fascinated that I bought and photographed it. This small piece of earth's history shows, on an area of only 8 x 6 cm, a landscape of "golden mountains" that could not be more similar to the real world of today.
