Simple joy
DESCRIPTION
Dani people in the Baliem Valley in Highland Papua, Indonesia. Discovered only in the last century. As accessibility to the isolated valley improved, missionaries began to flood in. Christian missions began converting the tribal Dani people, with great success. Christianity became the dominant religion of the people and the government since the second half of the last century.
The tribal war days are over. Subsistence farming is the main occupation, and sometimes supplemented by tourist dollars. Given their unique lifestyle and culture, the Dani became a tourist curiosity for a minority of tourists.
Children grow up in remote villages, with access to education difficult. But their traditional upbringing and music are simple yet joyous.
