This photograph, taken at Sandaoling Coal Mine in Hami, Xinjiang, captures one of China’s last steam locomotives before its retirement in January 2024. As diesel and electric trains replace it, this symbol of the industrial revolution fades into history. However, aging steam crew members face unemployment and an uncertain future. This image honors industrial heritage while reflecting on the social challenges of modernization and energy transition. AUTHOR
