Honorable Mention
Suspended at Sunrise
DESCRIPTION
In the soft light of dawn, a traditional fishing net floats above the river in Hoi An, Vietnam, its delicate lines catching the first light of day. Pastel hues reflect across still waters, the net
suspended like silk between sea and sky.
For generations, these vast nets, held in place by bamboo poles and taut ropes, have been part of
coastal life. Lowered at night and lifted with the sunrise, they are worked from small boats that glide beneath, guiding fish toward a central opening before spilling them into waiting baskets.
My intention in making this image was to honor both the visual grace of the net and the tradition it represents. I sought to preserve the quiet, expansive space between its lines, the gentle transitions of color in the sky, and the sense of time suspended, much like the net itself. Suspended at Sunrise is as much about light and form as it is about culture and continuity, a fleeting scene that reflects the enduring bond between water, work, and the people who rise with the sun.
