Mediterranean Sea, 1 August 2016. Amadou Sumaila (16), from Mali, poses for a portrait minutes after being rescued on the Mediterranean Sea, 20 nautical miles off the Libyan coast by a rescue vessel provided by the NGO Jugend Rettet. The rubber boat in which he travelled carried 118 people on board, who were transferred by the Italian Coast Guard to Lampedusa (Italy). AUTHOR
Born in Madrid in 1991, in a context of cultural mixture given by my Spanish-Persian origins, it soon awakens on me an interest to know different social and cultural realities. This will be reflected on my work as journalist and documentary photographer, in which I focus on the issues of migration, identity and human rights. After passing through the newsrooms of 20minutes and El Periodico de Catalunya, in 2015 I start to work as a freelancer, combining written journalism with photographic reports which have been published in media as Al Jazeera, The Guardian, BBC, De Groene Amsterdammer or El Pais, and exhibited in several galleries and photography festivals as Museum of Sydney (Australia), National Portrait Gallery (UK) or PhEst, Festa internazionale della fotografía (Italy).
My work has been recognized with the nomination to Joop Swart Masterclass 2017, the First Prize at Head On Photo Awards or a First Prize at the Picture of the Year Latam Awards 2017.
