DESCRIPTION
This series is a small study on nature’s extremes: the nurturing side and the viciously unpredictable one.I travelled to New Zealand with this idea in mind and to document the geologically active areas of the North Island. There, the contrast between lush vegetation and the ever evolving and rumbling earth below felt almost enticing, as if I was the first person exploring a long-lost world I had no knowledge of. I was intrigued by the idea of portraying the inexplicable uneasiness when coming across a foreign land.
Ultimately I am hoping this collection will inspire a true sense of mystery and renewed respect for nature and our surroundings that way too often we tend to forget and should instead be re-discovered.
AUTHOR
Chiara Zonca (b. 1982 in Milan, Italy) is a photographer based in Western Canada. She studied photography formally after high school and that was enough to put her off the profession for a while. Ten years later, after a career in video editing and motion graphic design, she re-discovered her love for still pixels and exploration.
She now seeks for remote and isolated spaces, documenting specific moments in time when changeable light or weather conditions alter her landscape perception. This necessary shift enables her to see past the present and investigate the earth as a timeless, untouched-by-humans, dream-like entity. Colour plays a big role in her creative process and it is an essential tool to convey her emotions.
