Honorable Mention
Lovely Dani woman
DESCRIPTION
Dani women are hospitable and smiling when they understand and accept the intrusion of the tourist, despite the shyness and hostility of the first meeting. We can see that one of the women has two of her fingers amputated. They cut a finger when a direct relative diez. Although not as common as in the past, some Dani women still breast-feed hungry piglets if the sow is no where to be found. I spent a few days with them in their village and they were very friendly
Territory under Indonesian rule, they fight for independence that guarantees their prosperity as a people, their identity as Papuans. They feel different from their Indonesian neighbors ethnically and culturally. Wamena, capital of the Baliem Valley and territory of the Dani tribes, is only reached by air
