Lines on my Face
DESCRIPTION
I captured this image of a cheetah cub in the Namiri Plains portion of the eastern Serengeti, Tanzania. The cub was one of three babies (along with their mother) that I spent a couple of days following. Namiri Plains is a grassland portion of the Eastern Serengeti that was closed to tourists for over 20 years to allow the cheetah population to replenish. It had only recently reopened when I was there and we were staying in temporary tents assembled just for our trip. This cub, its two siblings and their mother provided hours of entertainment and a portfolio of great experiences. While we were very careful not to get too close to them, (most of my images were shot at very long distances) we did have one instance where we got close, which is when I captured this portrait. During the two days I witnessed hours of play between the cubs and with their mother. I also watched for a full afternoon when the mother hid them in the safety of some bushes and went on a successful hunting trip. After catching a gazelle, she dragged it back over 100 yards to the safety of the bushes so her family could eat. It was after the feast that we moved in closer and I captured this image.
